“Technical error.”
SKA won against “Lokomotiv” (4:3 OT). Forward Brendan Laipsik scored another goal (how good he is!), Larionov Jr. was not included in the lineup, goalkeeper Artemy Pleshkov made 45 saves. In other circumstances, we would definitely be discussing these heroes, but another scandalous episode arose around SKA. Its participants turned out to be Sergey Plotnikov And Andrey Pedan.
These hockey players scored goals. And during the celebration, each of them lit up with a captain’s stripe. Seriously? How!
The team’s application for the game in Yaroslavl was published on SKA’s social networks. There Andrey Pedan is listed as the captain, and Sergey Plotnikov is one of his assistants.
But on the ice, Sergei Plotnikov initially acted as captain. Valentin Zykov and Marat Khairullin became his real assistants. There is confirmation from the match: Plotnikov rejoices at the puck at the 35:32 mark.

Pedan was given the captain’s stripe only in the third period. He also flashed with her during the celebration of his own goal. The scoreboard at that moment read 58:01. The assistants were no longer changed at that time, and Plotnikov was left without any letter on his shoulder at all.

SKA head coach Igor Larionov explained that he actually gave instructions to appoint Plotnikov as captain for the game with Lokomotiv. His desire for change arose after the defeat to Ak Bars (2:5), where Pedan was wearing the stripe. The club staff changed the players’ uniforms, but no changes were made to the protocol. This is where the confusion arose.
What else did Larionov tell: “When the assistants told me that Pedan had the letter “S”, I thought: “Maybe two guys have the letter “S”?” I asked Seryoga Plotnikov, he said: “I was told that in the protocol the letter “C” is for Pedan. Technical error, not global, but so funny. I myself did not expect and could not understand why we have Plotnikov with an empty space on his shoulder, and Pedan with the letter “S”. It ended up working well as Pedan scored a goal».
In general, the league clearly states what should be included in the match application. List from Article 41 of the KHL Sports Regulations: “Team composition by line, role, date of birth of hockey players, team captain and assistant team captain, reserve goalkeeper, foreign players, additional field players under the age of 20 inclusive, as well as five field hockey players and a goalkeeper for introduction before the start of the match.” There is no clear penalty for changing the captain during the match.
And here is an excerpt from the KHL refereeing manual: “A team cannot change its captain or assistant captains during a match. If the captain withdraws from the match or is unable to continue due to injury, one of the assistant captains must take over his duties.” But in Yaroslavl, SKA’s captain just changed so that all formalities would comply with the application.
Why did you realize it late? How was this not noticed initially? Will there be any reaction from the league? There are still more questions than real answers. For the future, Larionov at least made it clear: “In the next match, Plotnikov will be the captain.” We hope that there will be no protocol errors in the future.
